I take a few commissions for portraits each year which I work on in between my own creative projects. I take bookings for these in advance and there is a waiting time of six to twelve months. There is a 50% deposit to secure a commission slot.
My prices are based on the time it takes me to make a drawing or painting so I price each commission individually once we have discussed how you would like your portrait to look.
Pencil and charcoal are the quickest mediums for me to use and therefore are cheaper than pastel or oil on canvas. Head and shoulder portraits are quicker and therefore cheaper than full figure images.
Prices for a single head and shoulders portrait from your own photograph start from:
PENCIL - £150
CHARCOAL - £250
PASTEL - £400
OIL ON CANVAS £750
For the best results I suggest that I take the source photos, spend time in consultation with you throughout the full process of making the portrait and sometimes have in person sittings to check colouring and likeness. There are additional charges for these but they will ensure you are completely delighted with your finishing portrait.
A joint portrait is the same price as two individual portraits because of the time required to draw or paint each individual.
For a fuller portrait, including more of the figure, hands and feet etc I need to charge more because it takes longer to draw or paint.
A commission starts with a discussion about how you would like your portrait to look. Then, ideally, I like to meet my subjects and take a number of photographs to work from. A beautiful portrait starts from a good photoshoot; the right kind of lighting, pose and expression will allow me to capture the beauty and character of your loved one. Meeting my subject helps me to know when I have reached a true likeness.
The time needed to get the right photos depends on the subject. When working with children, especially more than one, it can take several hours. I will take many, many photos and together we will select the best ones.If distance is prohibitive I am able to work from your photographs and can help and guide you to take and select the right ones.
When working on your portrait I will share images of my progress with you, especially in the later stages to ensure you are happy with the likeness. It is very important to me that the portrait comes alive for you. That is the best part of being a portrait artist.
If your portrait needs to be posted I will send it well wrapped so it arrives in perfect condition. Drawings are rolled and shipped in a tube. Oil on canvas will be securely packaged. The cost of postage depends on your location.
