I am a strong advocate for Art education, believing everyone can learn how to draw - given time, inclination and tuition and I value the 'creative process'.  I love teaching practical skills as well as helping people explore their creativity and develop their ideas.

My workshops give a taste of what learning with me is like - expect techniques, demonstrations, challenge, focus, constructive criticism and thoughtful tuition. However, a day just isn't long enough to master the challenges of portraiture and I like to get to know people and find out how I can help their development, which is why I offer private tuition and Portrait Club.

WORKSHopS

Portraits in Graphite is a great introduction to portraiture or perfect if you are looking to sharpen up your skills.

It's designed to develop your observational drawing skills and increase your confidence with this challenging subject matter.

Working from photos we will cover:
-  methods for accurate recording of scale, proportion and shape.
- building  tonal value and using mark making to add to the illusion of three-dimensional form.

The maximum group size is 4 and the class is suitable for beginners in portraiture through to those who are developing their confidence.

Portraits in Charcoal will cover many of the same techniques as the Graphite workshop but with a particular focus on how to work with what many people think of as a tricky material. I LOVE charcoal! I will introduce the different types I use and take you through my process step by step.

You will develop your observational drawing skills and hopefully leave feeling more confident controlling the charcoal.

Working from photos we will cover:
-  methods for accurate recording of scale, proportion and shape.
- building  tonal value and using mark making to add to the illusion of three-dimensional form.

Portraits in Oils is both an introduction to using oil paints and how to start using them in your portraiture so would suit those without any experience with the media as well as those who have used it for other subject matter.

We will cover

- using a grisaille (monotone underpainting)

- colour mixing

- brushwork and mark making

Portraiture is difficult (I am still learning) and definitely not something you can master in a single workshop. Hence I am introducing portrait club - a chance to practice your portraiture skills on a regular basis and for me to get to know you and to tailor tutoring to wherever you are in your portraiture journey.

You don't have to commit to every week but you do need to book in advance to secure a space in the studio. - it can fit a maximum of 4.

£40 per session or £120 for 4 sessions booked in one go (£30 a session)

PRIVATE TUITION

My rates for private lessons are as follows

1 hour - £30 - aimed at younger learners (ideal for home schoolers) attending on a regular basis

3 hours - £65 - time for me to explain & demonstrate something and for you to have a go, receive feedback and practice a little.

Full day - £95 - spend the day with me in my peaceful studio - includes as much tuition as you would like and plenty of time to make some good progress on your portrait project.
