I adore charcoal, its creative versatility allows me to combine accurate realism with expressive mark marking to produce strong emotive works.  The range of tonal values that can be achieved, right through to the deepest blacks, make it ideal for large bold pieces to create an impressive focal point in a room.

I have developed a technique with powdered charcoal which adds a wonderful sense of energy and movement or a timeless dreamlike quality. It's perfect for multiple figure compositions of children where I include several images of the same child, showing more of their personality by capturing them in different moments. 

 

I work on heavy weight, acid free paper and because of its naturally inert nature charcoal is ideal for archival portraits.
